02 Mar Man United to beat injury hit PSG Dortmund to see off Spurs at Wembley
A fabulous weekend for the column as we took down three winners including a 7/1 shot in the shape of Liverpool to beat Bournemouth 3-0 on Saturday. The Champions League returns this week and there is no bigger game than Manchester United’s round of 16 first leg clash with Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.
Running total: -£40.09
When this draw was made almost two months ago, PSG fans would have been licking their lips at the prospect of facing Manchester United. The French giants were flying at the time with Neymar, Edison Cavani and Kylian Mbappe all scoring goals for fun. In stark contrast, the Red Devils were toiling under Jose Mourinho and his defensive, suffocating tactics. However the tables have now turned with United a different beast under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
And this game couldn’t have come at a worse time for PSG. Neymar and Cavani are both injured while defender Thomas Meunier suffered mild concussion at the weekend and so is also a major doubt. The pressure is firmly on Thomas Tuchel, who was hired not to run away with another Ligue 1 title but to conquer Europe. In the midst of an injury crisis he must cross the English Channel to face one of the most in-form teams in Europe. On recent evidence, all signs point to a United victory.
The First Goal Flutter
Sheffield United face Middlesbrough in the Championship on Wednesday and Britt Assombalonga looks big at 7/1 to score first. The burly striker has scored five in his last seven games and more than half of his 11 goals this season have come away from the Riverside.
The Tasty Treble
Real Madrid romped to an impressive 3-1 victory over city rivals Atletico Madrid at the weekend and can be trusted at 10/11 to see off Ajax in Amsterdam. The three-time defending champions seem to be hitting their stride just in time for the knockout stages having won six and drawn one of their last seven matches. Elsewhere, we like the look of Borussia Dortmund at 8/13 not to lose when they head to Wembley to face Tottenham. Spurs are still struggling with key injuries while Dortmund are sitting pretty at the top of the Bundesliga so should be backed to avoid defeat in bet365’s ‘double chance’ market. Finally, add Valencia to win against Celtic in the Europa League on Thursday for a European treble paying just shy of 11/2. Los Che have been a bit inconsistent in La Liga but have saved their best for Europe and can claim a precious first leg advantage against the Hoops.
Selection: £4 on the treble at 5.47/1 with bet365.
The Euro Wager
Lazio (7/5) have won their last two and also claimed a spirited 1-1 draw against Inter Milan in the San Siro. With this in mind they should be too strong when they face Sevilla in the Europa League on Thursday evening. The Spanish club have been very erratic this season and were disappointing last time out as they drew 2-2 at home to Eibar.
Selection: £5 on Lazio to win at 7/5 with bet365.
The Wildcard Tip
Borussia Dortmund are 9/2 to beat Spurs at Wembley with both teams scoring in the match; doubling the German side with Real Madrid to win in similar fashion against Ajax throws up a ‘Result – Both Team to Score’ double with bet365 paying just over 16/1. Both teams like to get forward and play football the right way and both games should produce a few goals.
